Aboriginal Youth Empowering Students
AYES is a unique cultural program aimed at providing Canadian
Aboriginal Youth the opportunity to empower impoverished Central
American children through education. The program’s basic
goal is to initiate a cycle of hope in young aboriginal Canadians
which will extend to their home communities, schools and the
children they support.
Through our work in SchoolBox, we have experienced that the
most powerful way to healing is through giving. We have seen
that through teaching we actually learn. From the impact of
historical tragedies, such as the residential school system,
today’s Aboriginal youth are left with dramatic gaps
in their identity. This program is designed to establish a
deep pride in our Aboriginal volunteers and help them rebuild
what has been lost. Our goal is to help each individual discover
his/her unique culture and identity through a cross-cultural
international exchange opportunity.
Education and hope are the fundamentals in rebuking the demons
of poverty. By inspiring children in the third world, Aboriginal
volunteers will learn that they are part of a common humanity
and that they can make a difference.
