| AYES - Why Me?
|
Why should I participate in this program?
Support the Right of a Basic Education
Although many native reserves live in poverty in Canada, it
does not compare to the conditions of many Nicaraguan communities.
Without basic supplies, resources or infrastructure, these communities
are up against great odds to educate their children at the most
basic level- to read and write.
Realize Your Potential at Home and Abroad
Working with impoverished children and schools in Central
America will open up tremendous opportunities for you to realize
your potential in this world. This experience will help you
to see the impact you can have abroad, and help you to realize
your potential at home. Your career and life will be transformed
by this program and your community blessed by your leadership
upon return from your volunteer trip.
This is Not Your Average Volunteer Experience
In SchoolBox you have the ability to create real, lasting
change in the lives of the children you meet. You will be
volunteering in impoverished communities, filled with culture,
passion and love. Working and sharing with the students at
your partner school will give you an opportunity to believe
in their dreams, encourage them to study while realizing the
potential you have to create change.
Share Who You Are With the World!
This is a journey at home in your reserve, at a national conference
where you will connect with Aboriginal youth from across Canada,
and within the community that will be empowered in Nicaragua.
You will have the opportunity to present art, dance, stories
and traditions from your heritage and rediscover the power
of culture.

Our Dream Our
dream is to empower you- so you can in turn become an ambassador
for SchoolBox, returning with the skills to create change in
your home community, school and with your peers. This will be
a great opportunity for motivated individuals trying to discover
their place in the world. Join with us as we Make Education
Possible at home and abroad. |

Our First Aboriginal Youth Volunteer
Danielle Ogen, a 23 year old aboriginal woman from the Burns
Lake Reserve in Northern B.C. joined SchoolBOX in the spring
of 2008 to build a school in Nicaragua. Her experience changed
her life forever.
She portrayed amazing leadership upon return from volunteering
in Nicaragua. She has excelled as the Youth Coordinator for
her band and has become a role model for the youth in her reserve.
She is working continuously to instil pride in the youth she
works with, encouraging them to share their culture and heritage.
Out of a community of low income and struggle, she has managed
to spark passion in those around her.
Danielle’s enthusiasm and desire to make a difference
was so contagious that we launched the Aboriginal Youth Empowering
Students Program in 2009 to share this hope with youth across
Canada. To read Danielle’s Testimony click here.
