About the Gala
Close to 600 people will attend the Ottawa Convention Centre to find out the winners of the "CTV Amazing Person of the Year" (for each of 2011 and 2012), as well as the "CTV's Viewers' Choice Award" which will involve on-line voting at www.ctvottawa.ca . CTV has profiled about 50 Amazing People who will be honoured on stage, before the singing and dancing begins in the beautiful Trillium Room overlooking the Rideau Canal at a red-carpet gala like no other.
Since Spring 2011, CTV's Kimothy Walker has been telling stories about the power of the human spirit Thursdays on "CTV News at 6pm". One of those stories won one of Canada's most prestigious journalism awards at the RTNDA Conference recently. The top 3 "CTV Amazing People" stories from each year, as selected by an impartial panel, will be shown at the gala before the winners are announced, along with the "CTV Viewers' Choice Awards". On that night we will, also raise enough money to build an entire school in Nicaragua, powered in part by young people in Ottawa. They will learn the importance of helping others on a global scale, the strength within themselves, and their ability to change their own community.
SchoolBOX is an Ottawa Valley charity, based in Almonte, that has built 32 classrooms to date in Central America for children in horrific poverty. The power of education is the focus. It started when the founder, Tom Affleck of Almonte, gave a Nicaraguan child a pencil and notebook, the only tools she needed to attend school.
The charity is growing because people from the Ottawa Area, and from around Canada, give their blood, sweat and tears to work in the communities to build the schools, alongside the children they help. Education is a powerful tool in any community and CTV is eager to support Ottawa young people making that happen for others.
CTV's Kimothy Walker will host the gala and has been instrumental in organizing it, along with CTV News Director Peter Angione, a dedicated committee of community leaders and SchoolBox volunteers who have already spent 6 months planning Ottawa's new and unforgettable gala.
