La Escuela Brett
La Escuela Brett (Brett's School) will provide an opportunity
for 100's of children to learn how to read and write. This
amazing facility, which will include 8 classrooms, washrooms
and an administrative office will be named in memory of Brett
Bentley Crawford who was tragically killed in a car accident
at the age of 19. Brett was a close personal friend of SchoolBOX
President Tom Affleck. La Escuela Brett will include the C.H.A.N.C.E
Preschool which was made possible by the generosity of the
C.H.A.N.C.E. foundation (www.chancefoundation.ca) and its
supporters.
La Escuela Brett will provide a permanent home for the Jezreel
School which began under a tree 8 years ago in the La Primavera
community in Managua, Nicaragua. This amazing school, which
has not received funding from the Nicaraguan government, managed
to operate based on the sheer faith and determination of its
teachers. Over the course of its short history the School
was forced to move locations 7 times as it could not afford
the rent which was as little as $30 a month.
The Nicaraguan Ministry of Education will own and operate
La Escuela Brett. As a result, once La Escuela Brett is complete,
the teachers working in the school will receive proper salaries.
The incredible quest to provide access to a basic education
for some of the poorest children in Central America will have
finally come to fruition.

Cenicera Public School Build
Cenicera is located in North West Nicaragua. The average
family income is about 750 USD annually, with the majority
of people living on less than a dollar per day. Children have
to walk up to 6km in order to get to school, but they are
still willing to learn. The Cenicera School desperately needs
a new school building. The sun shines on the students through
the holes in the roof in the summer and during rainy season
the dirt floor they learn on turns to mud. Help us educate
33 students and empower an entire community by building a
school.

Bella Vista School Build
The Bella Vista community is located in rural North West
Nicaragua. The community depends on subsistence farming. Children
live below the poverty line of $1 a day, and are usually encouraged
to harvest food rather than attend school. The goal within
the community is to break the cycle of poverty through education.
Currently the Bella Vista School is not safe. Attacked by
the sun in the summer, and drenched by the rain in the winter,
the children are at nature's mercy. They desperately need
a new classroom and bathrooms. Help us educate 32 students
and help them break the cycle of poverty.

Mata de Cana School Build
Located within the Maribios Volcano Chain in North West Nicaragua,
the Mata de Cana School exemplifies the difficulties of getting
an education in Nicaragua. The community lives a 3 hour hike
through the mountains from the nearest road. Everything is
carried in by foot or horseback - including the teacher. Every
Monday, a teacher rides up on horseback and returns home on
the Friday. Her arrival brings hope into the community. Help
us to empower 29 students through education by building a
safe and secure classroom and two bathrooms.

Shirley Case School Build
Located in Monte Olivo, in North West Nicaragua, the Shirley
Case School is going to bring hope and create dreams for over
118 students in the region. The area relies heavily on farming
beans, sesame seed and sugar cane. Currently the children
are studying in an old storage house and coffee roasting facility.
They will soon be learning in a 3 room school, complete with
playing field, library / multi-purpose room and 3 bathrooms.
The school is named after Shirley Case, a Canadian aid worker
who was tragically killed in Afghanistan. Her memory will
radiate through the hopes and dreams of the students and their
community.

Nuevo Amenecer School Build
he Neuvo Amenecer Community is located in North West Nicaragua.
The small schoolwas built after hurricane Mitch. The current
building is structurally unsound and poses a significant risk
to the students. The walls were not properly reinforced and
the building is likely to collapse during another storm or
earthquake. The classrooms have no windows. This is a major
health hazard as temperatures in the community rountinely
pass 40° centigrade. Children suffer from heat exhaustion
and teachers struggle in the conditions. Some parents have
stopped sending their kids to school in the community because
of these poor conditions. The SchoolBOX construction team
has determined that the current structure cannot be salvaged.
To ensure the safety of the students, an entirely new school
must be built.
