In Nicaragua many children
don’t attend school for lack of the most basic of supplies.
A notebook can literally stand in the way of a child receiving
or not receiving a basic education. As the poorest country in
the America’s, many of its citizens are forced to forgo
educational expenses in order to simply survive. It’s
little wonder that more than 42% of the children in this country
don’t finish Grade 5. (UNESCO, 2003). Things can change!
SchoolBox provides an educational package with sufficient
materials (notebooks, pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, ruler)
for a student to study for an entire semester. Our organization
gives each INDIVIDUAL student in our partner schools an educational
package, which ensures that the supplies are distributed in
the most equitable and transparent means possible. It is simple,
cost effective and it works! The impact on the children who
receive the packages is dramatic. In this photo, you can see
the excitement that they caused in this classroom.
SchoolBox also provides packages for the teachers that we
are working with which include; glue, colored pencils, scissors,
planning notebooks, stickers, tape and chalk. These basic
supplies allow the teachers to keep their classrooms functioning
on a day to day basis. With more and more of the financial
burdens for the schools being shouldered by teachers and parents
these supplies are more than welcomed. Truth be told, teachers
often shed tears of thankfulness.
